The Importance Of Being "Earnest"

I have to admit that Kirsten Powers really tickled my funny bone this morning.

ASK passers-by on any street in America what their top issue is for the upcoming presidential election, and they'll all answer the same thing: the Foreign Service Intelligence Act.

Gas prices, home foreclosures, the Iraq war - all pale in comparison. Single mothers gathered at the laundromat are all talking about one thing: FISA.

And if you get them to stop yammering on about immunity for telecoms, you won't be able to shut them up about their next favorite outrage: Barack Obama's decision to opt out of public financing.

Don't believe it? Then - unlike many left-wing bloggers and activists, known as the "net roots" - you're in touch with reality.

Now to be honest, all bloggers have a tendency to do this. We all tend to take ourselves a little too seriously, which is one reason why hanging around with guys like Mitch and Foot and the Fraters Guys and the Anti-Strib crew are necessary. A little humor, especially of the self deprecating variety is good for the mental outlook and for the humility. It is also a good reminder that there is more to life than politics. You have to come up for air every once in a while in order to clear your head. It also helps you to realize the one thing that a lot of us seem to forget when we lock ourselves in the rarefied air of the echo chamber.

The true believers' passion is admirable - but, at some point, grownups realize that they can't get everything their way. Instead, left-wing activists can seem emotionally stunted - always seeking the mountaintop experience, when governing happens in the valleys.

As a very wise legislator once told me - sometimes you have to go about the business of governing and in business you sometimes have to negotiate. When negotiating, you don't always get everything you want but if you are a good enough negotiator......

Updates

My regular Minnesota readers no doubt know that I have finally completed my move to Utah and I am starting to pick up Utah readers - especially as I write more and more about politics here in my new home. So just to explain to everyone, I will be (at least for this election cycle) be writing about politics in BOTH states. I still have my sources in Minnesota who I am in constant contact with and I will be starting to make contacts here in Utah in the coming months.

So to my conservative friends in Minnesota - you will get a taste of what life in a red state is like and to my new soon to be friends in Utah - you will get a taste of blue state life as a reminder of why you don't EVER want to go down that road.

I hope you all keep stopping by to get your daily fix of political insight from a Lady's point of view.

Apologies

To all of my TownHall readers, I do owe an aplogy and an explaination for my prolonged absense of late.  For the last two weeks I was on the road - moving to Utah due to a job transfer.  While I was blogging at my main site (www.ladieslogic.com) I was having problems publishing to TownHall due to firewalls etc while I was in transit.  Then once I got to the new homesite, I just didn't have time to cross post from the main site.  Thanfully, starting today I will have a little more spare time on my hands, so I will be cross posting the last two weeks worth of posts from the main site to here.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Pardon The Interruption

My hosting service went to upgrade their security software yesterday and computers being what they are, there was a conflict in the programming codes and one thing lead to another and as a result it was lights out here for the better part of 12 hours.  We are back up and running and we'll have lots of new content to make up for lost time!

Technical Difficulties

Well it appears that the hosting company for the main site (www.ladieslogic.com) is having some technical difficulties this afternoon.  Please stand by - hopefully they will have it fixed soon enough.

Blog-keeping

For those of you expecting a wrap up on last nights debate of HF 3149 I apologize that it has not been posted yet.  I spent most of the day dealing with an anonymous commenter on the main site.  I will not say much about my anonymous "friend" other than to say that he is known to me.  He made some rather weak insinuations about Rep. Mark Buesgens and I ended up spending most of the day chasing those leads down, rather than dealing with 3149.  For those that care, the allegation was that Rep. Buesgens owed property taxes (on an investment property) in Ramsey County.  I called Rep. Buesgens who told me that it was a bank screw up and that he had made payment arrangements with Ramsey County to take care of the situation.  That information has been independently confirmed.  My anonymous troll apparently thinks that a one time bank error on a property tax payment ranks up there with at least 4 years worth of non payment of income taxes.  The nice thing is that this was easily resolvable by a couple of phone calls...something my anonymous "friend" could have easily done as well however he chose instead for the "anonymous" smear.

Which leads me to a larger dilemma.   I want this space to be about advancing dialog - no about throwing out undocumented smears.  Because of my anonymous "friend" I am now forced to decide whether or not I should allow anonymous comments going forward.  I do understand the desire to sometimes comment anonymously, but we just saw the exact reason why people do not allow anonymous comments unfold before us (on the main site) today.

While I have not yet decided on what I will do, I will let you know that the decision will be made today.  If you are used to commenting anonymously and you have not abused the practice, please realize that one bad apple has spoiled it for everyone.
